Allergy Shots (Allergen Immunotherapy) in the Bay Area
Allergy shots — also known as allergen immunotherapy — are the only treatment proven to modify the underlying allergic disease rather than simply masking symptoms. At South Bay Allergy and Asthma Group, our board-certified allergists design personalized immunotherapy programs for patients with environmental allergies and allergic asthma who want lasting, meaningful relief.
Book AppointmentWhat Are Allergy Shots?
Allergen immunotherapy involves administering gradually increasing doses of your specific allergens through subcutaneous injections. Over time, this process desensitizes your immune system, reducing IgE-mediated sensitivity and shifting the immune response away from the allergic pathway. The result is fewer symptoms, decreased reliance on allergy medications, and, for many patients, long-term remission of allergic disease even after treatment is completed.
Common Reasons Patients Consider Allergy Shots
- Allergic rhinitis (hay fever) that is not adequately controlled with medications
- Allergic asthma with identified environmental triggers
- Allergic conjunctivitis affecting quality of life
- Insect venom allergy, including bee or wasp sting allergy
- A desire to reduce long-term dependence on allergy medications
How We Determine If You’re a Candidate
Candidacy for allergy shots is determined by your allergy test results, symptom burden, medical history, and lifestyle. Our allergists will discuss whether immunotherapy is appropriate for you and, if so, develop a customized injection schedule and allergen extract formulation based on your specific sensitivities.
Treatment Options at South Bay Allergy
A typical immunotherapy program consists of a build-up phase with weekly injections over approximately six to seven months, followed by a maintenance phase with monthly injections for three to five years. All injections are administered in our office with a brief post-injection observation period to ensure your safety. Each of our four Bay Area locations offers convenient allergy shot appointments.
