Immunodeficiency Evaluation & Treatment in the Bay Area
When infections occur too frequently, last too long, or become unusually severe, an underlying immune deficiency may be responsible. As board-certified allergists and immunologists, the physicians at South Bay Allergy and Asthma Group have specialized expertise in evaluating immune function and diagnosing primary and secondary immunodeficiency disorders in both children and adults.
Book AppointmentWhat Is Immunodeficiency?
Immunodeficiency disorders are conditions in which one or more components of the immune system do not function properly, resulting in increased susceptibility to infections. Primary immunodeficiencies (PIDs) are genetic conditions present from birth, although symptoms may not appear until childhood or adulthood. Common primary immunodeficiencies include Common Variable Immunodeficiency (CVID), selective IgA deficiency, and specific antibody deficiency. Secondary immunodeficiencies are acquired and may result from medications, malnutrition, cancer treatments, or other underlying medical conditions.
Common Signs & Symptoms
- Four or more ear infections per year in children
- Two or more serious sinus infections per year
- Two or more pneumonias within a year
- Need for intravenous antibiotics to clear infections
- Infections that return shortly after antibiotic treatment ends
- Infections caused by unusual or opportunistic organisms
- A family history of primary immunodeficiency
How We Diagnose
Immune system evaluation at South Bay Allergy may include quantitative immunoglobulin testing (IgG, IgA, IgM, and IgE), measurement of antibody responses to vaccines such as pneumococcal and tetanus vaccines, complete blood counts with differential to evaluate immune cell populations, lymphocyte subset analysis when indicated, and specialized testing of complement levels and neutrophil function when clinically appropriate.
Treatment Options at South Bay Allergy
Treatment is tailored to the specific immunodeficiency identified. Options may include immunoglobulin replacement therapy administered intravenously or subcutaneously for antibody deficiencies, prophylactic antibiotics to prevent recurrent bacterial infections, vaccination optimization, aggressive infection management, coordination with hematology, infectious disease, and other specialists, and referral for genetic counseling when a hereditary condition is suspected.
